Journal Entry - Default Date

Why does this script should default to the last day of the previous month? Should it not default to today's date?

I set it as this because I think over the past 35+ years as an accountant the majority of the GL journals I have done, have been related to the production of the previous periods accounts, hence the date as the end of the previous period.
