You can create prices for all sales types defined - and all currencies defined.
Check you setup->Configuration Settings to see what the default price list (sales type) is.
Also check setup->Currencies to see what you home currency is.
Now check the item->Prices to ensure you have a price set up for the default sales type and currency.
