Sales Regions or Territories

Has anybody done anything with Sales Territories and grouping sales people into a reporting structure?
I understand areas can be used to group customers.
What I am looking for is to assign different salespeople into a region or area and have a sales manager be able to see all their salespeople. This could be useful for reporting.
If I were to develop this functionality do people have any specific requirements?
