Magic Quotes Problem

Am using WebERP 4.07.8 one an external shared server
phpinfo shows magic quotes = ON

I get the following error message:

Your webserver is configured to enable Magic Quotes. This may cause problems if you use punctuation (such as quotes) when doing data entry. You should contact your webmaster to disable Magic Quotes

I tried creating a .htaccess file with two lines as follows
magic_quotes_gpc = off
register_globals = off
and uploaded it to weberp root directory but then I get a 500 server error and can not log in.

I tried creating a php.ini (with above two lines) file and putting it on the web root directory but the problem is not gone

How can I turn magic_quotes_gpc OFF on a shared server

previously the default setting for magic_quotes was OFF on my shared server
