If a line item in the Packing List is controlled it would be nice to have a line where the Packer/Picker could enter the number of the item selected. This way when the signed Packing List comes back to the office we can apply the numbers during Invoicing.

How are the rest of you doing this now?

I don't have any controlled things, but is the area around the item code enough to 'jot' something down, or is there more to the picture?

Shouldn't the system be mandating what batches to use based on the expiration date field (if one is given?)

Also for picking lists?

In a warehouse operation many assume Lot/Batch/Serial Numbers will be picked/pulled during time of dispatch using the Packing List. Therefore Lot/Batch/Serial Numbers are not known UNTIL product is picked/pulled for shipment. Dispatch personnel write down Lot/Batch/Serial Numbers on Packing List which is returned to office for record and invoicing. During the invoicing process Lot/Batch/Serial Numbers are applied to the invoice for record and for removal from inventory.

This is how Heat Numbers for ASME material are pulled from inventory at all my customer sites. You don't know which Heat Numbers are used UNTIL the order is picked/pulled for fabrication. This happens because you don't want ERP to assign Heat Numbers that are not readily available. For instance material stored up high, under, or behind other stock. In that context Heat Number is the same as Lot/Batch Number.

We did the same with Serial Numbers for ionization and photoelectric smoke detectors in that they were not assigned until they were pulled. We had so many in stock there was NO WAY to know which would go to a job UNTIL the job was picked/pulled. If the ERP system assigned numbers FIRST it would take many hours to dig around to find the matching items. This is not even remotely feasible.

Perhaps it could be done both ways but not in ETO / MTO environments. Very different than widget-based CTO environments.

It's just a formality like how I added date and signature lines to the bottom of ours. It serves as a reminder.
Another example of Heat Numbers...

Let's say we need some 1/2" thick SA-240 304/304L plate for lift lugs and supports. Some of the pieces are large and some are small. The burn table operator goes to stock and finds pieces that best fit the shape and size with the least amount of drop. There can be MANY Heat Numbers for the 1/2" thick SA-240 304/304L plate in stock. Same for welders using small bits and pieces -- They find pieces that best fit the shape and size with the least amount of drop. In this case we will have many Heat Numbers.

If there was no 1/2" thick SA-240 304/304L plate in stock it could all come from a brand new large piece of 96" x 144" brought into stock for the job. In this case all the Heat Numbers could be the same.

At the end of the job the BoM included with the Job Traveler is returned to QM with all the Heat Numbers used for the job.

We could have two or more IDENTICAL vessels but each can have differing Heat Numbers,
