Maybe the ideal is google groups http://groups.google.com/?hl=en - with perfect mailing list capability combined with a nice forum experience?

If the consensus is to keep mailing lists as well as forum then that would seem to be the ideal solution.

What do you think?

Will this be better for the nabble brigade.
It looks like way better search facilities for old posts.

Phil

Yes, this looks better. I look forward to contributing to the product. As long as you can actively keep spammers off this would be great. Having this will provide an additional level of openness to the product.

Oh, and this will also improve on the ability to keep on specific topics.

It will also allow for non-relevant discussions and/or disagreements between parties to have their own wee place for those who need to see them.

Ha! Indeed.... that would be a most excellent result :-) perhaps I should make up a separate forum ;-)

On spammers there is a plugin for this forum software which is apparently quite effective. It has apparently prevented Timmy from joining ironically... I've tried to loosen the control a bit - not sure if he has managed to join up yet.
I prefer the forum. I can easily see all notes on a given subject, which may have occurred over multiple days, or weeks, and don't have to scroll down through the email messages. But I don't think the email should be stopped. I personally will just stop using it as I prefer the forum for many reasons.

I think will be useful if Phil sets up a sticky note with some general rules to use the forum efficiently.

I can think of one and is "Write a descriptive title". Kind of "help! can't start", or "installation does not work" will not be useful after few weeks, but "Error XXXX on startup" will help much to future readers.

There are many forum rules around, we just need to use some of them.

Regarding the automatic or manual joining system, I think a manual will be less time consumening for admins than automatic one. Happened to me as well. Spammers are too smart for me, so manual joining validation was the solution. Also, a really interested user will wait few hours or days to get his acceptance. It's not a PS2 game forum, it's about a business core software, so you wait a bit to "join the club".
As suggested by Anders on the list, I have setup to send messages automatically to the mailing list. If people don't like it then I can easily stop it.

I thought I had, maybe this is better.

Tim
I've set up a sticky thread as you suggested Ricard... for rules under the Project Admin forum.
Still not sure about this ... if we are duplicating all threads here on the list that seems a bit crazy to me... if the spam thing becomes a problem and we have an inbox full of duplicated threads I am sure we will all get over the forum idea!!
Guess we will see how it goes.... maybe a voluteer to admin the forum and keep Tim and I in check :-)
Well a democracy it is. We keep both the mailing list and the forum.
This is more work for me ... without a voluteer to assist.
I will see how it goes monitoring the forum and keeping it spam free...

I saw on another OSS forum the word "do-ocracy" ... I like this and webERP is largely a do-ocracy... you do it we have it!!

I do reserve the right to veto developments which compromise the core goals of webEP http://www.weberp.org/ (now under guiding principles on the home page) in particular I am opposed to increasing the complexity of the code for the benefit of technical niceties and for that reason developers should post their plans under "Development Specification"
